Fluoride

Fluoride explained in clear patient-friendly language, including what to notice, what a dentist may review, and questions to ask.

Good Habits

Fluoride strengthens enamel and can help slow or reverse the earliest stage of tooth decay.

Evidence-based guidance

Practical steps for fluoride.

How fluoride helps

  • Fluoride replaces minerals lost during acid attacks and makes enamel more resistant to future damage.
  • It benefits children and adults through fluoridated water, toothpaste, and risk-based professional or prescription products.

Daily use

  • Brush at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Children younger than three generally use a rice-grain smear; ages three to six use no more than a pea-sized amount with adult supervision.
  • Teach children to spit toothpaste rather than swallow it.

Additional protection

  • Varnish, gel, prescription toothpaste, supplements, or rinses may be recommended according to age, water fluoride level, and cavity risk.
  • Do not begin supplements or high-strength fluoride products without professional guidance.
  • Children younger than six should use mouth rinse only when a dentist or physician recommends it.
