Description

General Anesthesia can influence oral comfort, disease risk, treatment choices, or healing. Its dental significance depends on personal history and current findings.

What to Expect

The patient is fully unconscious under an anesthesia team with continuous monitoring and airway support in an appropriately equipped setting.

Risks and Concerns

Nausea, sore throat, dental or airway injury, allergic or cardiovascular events, breathing complications, and very rare severe outcomes are possible.

Treatment Alternatives

IV or oral sedation, nitrous oxide, local anesthesia, behavioral techniques, or dividing treatment may reduce the required depth of anesthesia.

Delaying Treatment

When general anesthesia is necessary to provide safe care, delay may allow pain, infection, nutrition problems, or treatment complexity to increase.

Questions to Ask

Why is general anesthesia recommended? Where will it occur, who provides it, and what medical clearance, fasting, recovery, and supervision are required?
